problems with the score
so the other day we had problems with our score, the stuff poppy provided, albeit good and free which is the most important thing, wasn't fitting. as a director i had always wanted something lighthearted, but distinct to other tracks that gave the piece a certain atmosphere. so i made a call to a friend in a 90's inspired emo band. theyre getting pretty big in the scene, playing with some good bands. Darryl Peate also listened to a track and thought if we looped the beginning it would do the job, and we agreed. so i called in a favour to my mate ben, the vocalist of the band and the kid who formed it, and thankfully he was more than happy to let us use his track. so here it is. ps we didn't use the bit at the start with the loop
Brett Novak videos
Here are three skate vids featuring Killian Martin, directed by Brett Novak. Personally I think Novak's skate vids are miles apart from others of the genre. Generally skate vids are rough and fast paced whereas Novak takes a stylistic approach to his own videos. His use of slow motion specifically is admireable as it highlights the skill of the skater. His choice of locations are also a nice touch as they are very cinematic. This cinematic approach is something I will try to influence on the team as there director.
blog of new bird
a blog publishing pics of new bird as it was being built, very useful as recce shots and in the influence of our doc.

Liverpool doc
Initially when set the brief and told we would film in Liverpool for two days I thought of doing a documentary on Liverpools current music scene. I thought of this because of the rich music history the city has and the doc would have involved interviewing a current band on the scene. Then I watched a short doc called "Passion". The doc was about a young tattoo artist in Sheffield, and how he took something that he enjoyed as a hobby, drawing, and making a career of it. This is an idea that I found to be very interesting and wanted to do a similar idea. We set upon looking at a local business we could do it with and found a skate shop. We thought that the skate shop could be visually interesting and then decided to research this idea further. It was during this research that our editor, Alex, found an article on New Bird skate park and we were moved by the story. We then set upon acquiring contacts to film at the skate park. The link to the article is included in this post.

We found a certain passion within the story, that being that the skaters fought to save something they created and we all felt that this could be used as a strong narrative for the piece.

Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon
This is a film that has inspired our director Alex. Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon has a certain style that I wish to include in my own camerawork for our project. We also found the idea of crossing genres to be and exciting one and one which we also wanted to play around with. A example of this in Meshes of the Afternoon would be that the film is not only experimental/avante garde it also uses techniques to create suspense which could be found in most modern thrillers/horrors
just some videos to start me off
Maya Deren's At Land displays an idea of 'Creative geography' where the protagonist moves from one location to another effortlessly, this is something Alex and I discussed and an idea that we would really like to include in our film.
Ideas for experimental film project
As i have been delegated the job of cinematographer/ for the upcoming experimental film project, I thought it would be a good idea to not only read the article provided in the lecture but also do some research online about camera and editing techniques used in experimental film. Here are some of the websites and articles I came across.

Helpful videos
both alex and i found these videos very helpful when trying to recreate the sounds of a prison riot/fight
Narrative
The narrative for our piece is as follows
- a prison warden collects an inmate from his cell.
- he is then taken to the cafeteria.
- this is where the inmate is antagonised by another prison.
- a fight then ensues causing other prisoners to riot
- the prison alarms are set and the guards have to use full force, including gunfire, to stop the riot.
Location Change
Due to constant neglect from the school we had asked to use for our recording, and the fact that they only got back in touch a few days before we had planned to record, we had changed the location of our project. We decided to record around university as this provided similar sounds.
Sense of space audio project
when recieving the brief for this project, i came up with the idea to record in my former primary school, Hucklow Primary, and then convert the recordings in soundcut pro to sound like a prison. this would have involved sounds such as the school cafateria, the school yard and individual sounds such as bells, bars etc.
